Non-Rotation Training Experience

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Training Center for Behavioral Medicine has a DBT program which consists of a multidisciplinary consultation team, skills groups, and individual therapy. Interns may participate in this program throughout the year regardless of their rotation commitment. As part of the DBT program, an intern would have the opportunity to become involved in facilitating groups, providing individual therapy, and participating in weekly consultation team meetings. Supervision would be provided by a licensed psychologist who is also on the DBT consultation team. In addition, the team receives consultation and support from the statewide DBT training coordinator.

Health Psychology Interns have the opportunity to spend time in health psychology-related services at Truman Medical Center in such areas as pain management, employee wellness, sickle cell, asthma, and women's health.

Suicide Research Interns have the opportunity to be involved in the Suicide Triage and Training Initiative, a project dedicated to a) discovering improvements in triage relating to severity, risk, and the identification of specific suicide typologies; b) teaching new, evidence-based interventions for the reduction of suicidal thinking and behavior; and c) identify fundamental systems problems and generate new approaches and initiatives to improve the system of care for persons suffering suicidal ideation. Involvement may include administering participant surveys, assessment, video interviewing, training, or system change meetings.

Teaching Psychology staff members are regularly involved in the teaching and training of medical students and psychiatric residents on topics such as Systems of Psychotherapy, Assessment Methods, and Psychotherapy Skill Development. Interns will participate in teaching by preparing and providing lectures as assigned by the Training Director.

Outpatient Psychotherapy Interns are required to carry a caseload of two or three weekly psychotherapy cases throughout the training year. The interns have the option of obtaining cases for this experience from TMC BH (adult or child) or CBM group homes.

Police Training in Crisis Intervention This training occurs three or four times per year, and interns have the opportunity to attend lectures and/or observe crisis reenactment role plays which focus on effective strategies in dealing with crisis.

Consultation/Education of Group Home Staff Group homes operated by CBM have in the past sought consultation and training for understanding and managing group home resident behavior. Interns may have the opportunity to provide this service.
